Cincinnati Bengals, kicker Mike Nugent agree to work out long-term deal-NFL News
The Cincinnati Bengals and kicker, Mike Nugent, are hoping to work out a long-term deal well before the deadline of July 15, 2012, but the process might be delayed given that the player is going to be preoccupied with the preparations for his wedding.
Nugent’s wedding is scheduled in a couple of months and according to his agent, Ken Harris, the player might not be available during this period.
The agent’s comment came after the player signed the franchise tender worth $2.654 million.
Harris has accepted the tender following the team’s assurance of landing him a new long-term deal and the deadline to agree to fresh contract is July 15.
Until then, either of the parties can opt out of the franchise tender arrangement. The player can move elsewhere around the league provided he receives an interest and if the team is unable to match the tender price offered by another party.
The team, in the meantime, has an option to terminate the tender agreement and let the player go become an unrestricted free agent.
Following the signing of the tender, both sides have agreed to work out the deal before the deadline.
Nugent’s agent is expected to lead the process of negotiations with the managers on behalf of his client. His role is going to be even more crucial in absence of the player.
Nugent is planning to stay away from the team’s offseason voluntary workout and other activities during the period leading to his wedding.
He is expected to return to the squad before start of the training camp, and if the prospective long-term deal is reached with the team, he will be a regular part of the team next season.
Some of game commentators believe that it is least likely that the player chooses to move elsewhere. The possibility of him exploring an opportunity elsewhere remains insignificant given that he does not have much time to work on the matter.
