Cincinnati Bengals Adam Jones warns rookies: Don’t spend $1 million on single weekend as I did –NFL News
The entire bunch of rookies in the National Football League (NFL) who were lectured about a number of issues at about a week-long NFL symposium had some unique personal experiences of former and current pro players to listen.
One of them was of Adam Jones of the Cincinnati Bengals who, while warning rookies against the habit of overspending, said he happened to spend $1 million on a weekend.
He took everyone at the stage and among the audience by surprise. He emphasised that the rookies should take extra care of their finances during their career to avoid post-retirement life difficulties.
He even shocked the audience when said that 90 percent of his childhood friends from Atlanta are either dead or in jail, emphasising how life had been rough and tough for them.
Adam warned the rookies against indulging into any off-field attractions or distractions as they can derail their careers as well as lives permanently. They do not only suffer in career and money but their families also fall apart.
The symposium, which the NFL has been organising for the last 15 consecutive seasons, is to help the rookies in smooth transition from college career to professional league.
The phase proves to be very overwhelming experience for many of them, taking their focus far away from their career and life.
Some of the rookies found the seminar a learning experience. They particularly were surprised to know that a large number of pro players finish their career without any money with them.
This is one of the rare opportunities that people come to know the actual situations of pro players who otherwise look to be very well off, enjoying luxurious lives.
Jacksonville Jaguars’ wide receiver, Justin Blackmon, who recently had an unpleasant experience of being arrested under the DUI (driving under influence) charge, took all lessons from the seminar very seriously.
The particularly impressive point of the gathering was that a number of former and current players spoke from the perspectives of their own experiences, and a number of stories such as of Jones changed the rookies’ perception of the pro
environment or prospects altogether.
