Cincinnati Bengals’ head coach Marvin Lewis extends his tenure another two years – NFL News
Marvin Lewis has become the longest serving head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals, entering the 10th year of his tenure with the Bengals since joining them in 2003 and he is not done yet, for at least another couple of years, after signing a two-year
extension with the team.
The two-year deal has allowed the coach to work in the capacity through to 2014. Thanks to the stable and consistent approach of the owner Mike Brown that Marvin has continued to thrive in the coaching role in spite of the fact that the team has not achieved
any major success during his stint.
Nevertheless, the coach is happy to win the extension and said he is looking forward to serving the side with the same spirit.
He said:
"It's gratifying, obviously, to have that opportunity to be in place here now for 12 seasons. But at the end of the line there is one thing that hangs over your head, and you've got to do that, and that's to win a championship."
The official has luckily survived all the odd situations. His future had faced uncertainty just before conclusion of his previous contract in 2010 when the Bengals finished the season at a poor note of 4-12.
Next year the team did better, progressing through to the playoffs on the last wildcard opportunity but lost in the first round.
Lewis himself sees the team to have progressed well since his joining. This is probably the thinking of the owner as well, who apparently is not willing to go for any major overhauling of the squad.
After signing the extension, Lewis said:
"Obviously we've gotten better since I first walked in this room in January 2003. There's been an evolution. I think everybody who ever walks out on that practice field - talking about visiting coaches and so forth - they've talked about that.”
Lewis at the moment is supervising training camp of the team at the Paul Brown Stadium. The team has moved the camp to the stadium for the first time in the franchise history.
