Cincinnati Bengals’ receiver Jerome Simpson aims to clear himself in drug trafficking case – NFL News
Cincinnati Bengals’ receiver, Jerome Simpson, who faces drug trafficking charges in a local court, has claimed of his innocence in the issue.
His denial has come in his plea of not guilty that the player has entered into in Kenton County Circuit Court in Covington on Monday, January 30, 2012, to defend himself against the charges.
The plea from the player had come after a grand jury indicted him for having been found in possession of a quantity of Marijuana, which was tracked by the local agents from California.
The agents had intercepted a package to the address of his home in Northern Kentucky containing about two and half pounds of marijuana.
Later, the local authorities raided his house and found another eight pounds of marijuana. A case had been filed against the player and he after being formally indicted in the charges faces the court to clear him.
To that end the player has claimed his innocence by entering in the not guilty plea. A grand jury has to reach a conclusion if he is true to his claims. He faces a single charge of being in possession of more than eight pounds of marijuana.
Simpson is into the final year of his four-year deal with Bengals and can possibly go free agency on its expiry later this year. He is now being consumed away by the issue of drug trafficking that emerged earlier this year (2012).
The player, if found guilty, faces a penalty, which has not been indicated as yet. The judge is expected to determine it finally.
This may not bode well into the progress of his career, which has recently been on the improvement as a result of his success at the Cincinnati. He stood a chance for renewal of his contract by his team or could possibly fetch a better price through his
signing by any other team off free agency.
He had played a role in the success of Bengals in the 2011 National Football League (NFL) regular season. The team had an opportunity out of the blue to play the wild-card game, which they lost to the American Football Conference (AFC) South division champions,
the Houston Texans.
His record comprises of 53 passes for 758 yards, which include four touchdowns. He had a great significance as receiver in the team’s chances of win.
The news of his alleged involvement in drug trafficking surprised his teammates and other members of his team, who did not see it bearing good promises for his future. They have expressed hope that he will be able to clear himself and prove his innocence
in the court of law.
Nothing much has been said by Bengals’ management on the issue, especially if the latest development will affect the chances of renewal of his contract.
