Cincinnati Bengals refrain from commenting on assault charge of linebacker Rey Maualuga– NFL News
The Cincinnati Bengals have refrained from commenting on the case of their linebacker, Rey Maualuga, who is charged, on Friday, February 10, 2012, for an alleged assault on a bar employee during a brawl at a bar in Cincinnati, early past Sunday morning.
Maualuga has been accused of punching one man in the face after heated argument on some unknown matter and the police, following the allegations and their investigations, announced to have charged the player.
His arraignment is due on February 17 and in spite that no attorney has been assigned to the players as of Friday, February 10, 2012.
The account of the charge is disclosed to misdemeanour and it is not yet clear that the player on being found guilty what sort of punishment faces.
This is for the second time since 2010 that Maualuga is reported for breaking law, as he was fined by the National Football League (NFL) over admitted drunken driving last year.
He was also convicted in the case and handed down a seven-day suspended jail term.
His team management was asked about the latest charges against the player, and they opted to keep a mum on the issue, as according to their spokesman, Jack Brennan, they do not comment on the pending legal matters.
There is no statement from any member of the families of the player or complainant, so there are no further details around the occurring of the incident and aftermath.
None of the stakeholders have come to their clarification and clearance, yet.
It is most probably the legality of the case that the affected parties do not want to influence with their comments, as it can have negative impact on the player’s plea of accepting or rejecting the charges.
The situation is expected to become clearer after the initial hearing on February 17, and whether the accused will stand merit of court proceedings or reaching of a conclusion of the case in any otherwise scenario.
Irrespective to a possible outcome of the case, the player’s career is not going to be affected in the near future as the NFL season is already over and the offseason continues.
It will be now next season that the team appears on the field to play the premier league later this year.
They expect Maualuga to be cleared from the charges or consequent punishment by then and join the squad for next season.
Maualuga has a role in Bengals’ defence and has contributed to their wins at many occasions. The last two incidents point out at him being more prone to risk of flouting laws, which has brought him into trouble at least couple of times.
The bar brawl is the latest of controversies around him.
