Cincinnati Masters 2010: Mardy Fish ousts Andy Murray in quarters
Fourth ranked Andy Murray, in spite of fighting hard, lost his quarterfinal match at the ATP Cincinnati Masters 2010 against American opponent Mardy Fish in a total of three sets on Friday. The final match score was 6-7 (7-9), 6-1 and 7-6 (7-5).
The British ace started the match quite well by winning the first set with ease. However, Murray soon lost his touch. Murray’s momentum faltered in the next set as Fish grabbed the opportunity to take full advantage of his weakness under the sun.
In spite of the fact that the 23-year-old Murray tried really hard to force the last set to a tie-breaker, Mardy turned out to be just too good for him.
As a result of this victory, the 36 ranked American Mardy Fish will now meet Andy Roddick in the semi-final of the ATP Cincinnati Masters 2010. Roddick on the other hand reaches the semi-final of the competition after beating Novak Djokovic in a two setter clash on Friday. The final match score was 6-4 and 7-5.
The loss against Fish ends Andy Murray’s seven match winning streak which included victories at the Rogers Cup in Toronto last week.
The match started at 12 p.m. local time after Andy's request for a late start was refused by officials. Andy Murray didn’t play his natural game probably because of the heat that affected his game against Ernests Gulbis on Thursday.
"If you request for a late clash and you're still forced to play early on, that’s not a small thing”, said Andy, who was reluctant to say anything harsh about tournament officials.
"I don’t think I request that often about the timings of the match. I am not demanding at all during the championships”.
The Scot said that his request was not accepted as the organisers said that his American opponent Fish was participating in the doubles event later on Friday.
Murray, while commenting on the heat, said that he had considered retiring from the match at one stage. However, he decided to carry on fighting for victory.
"You always try your level best to finish off your matches. As far as I know I have just withdrawn from one or two matches out of over three hundred or around on the tour”, added Murray.
Nevertheless, Mardy Fish did really well to end his seven match winning streak by knocking him down in the quarters of the Cincinnati Masters 2010 on Friday.
As far as Murray is concerned, he is still left with ten days to prepare for the final major of the season, the United States Open tournament which will start from the 30th of this month.
"Physically, the last whole week as well as this one has been great for me prior to the start of the US Open”,  said Murray, who made his way into the final battle at the Flushing Meadows in New York back in 2008.
In other action, second ranked Swiss tennis master Roger Federer made his way into the last four after getting the better of Russian tennis ace Nikolay Davydenko at Cincinnati. The final match score was 6-4 and 7-5.
The American tennis ace Andy Roddick on the other hand toppled second seed Serbia’s Novak Djokovic in a two setter clash. The final match score was 6-4 and 7-5.
