Cincinnati Masters 2010: Nadal, Federer, Murray and Djokovic win their opening matches
The men’s top seed Rafael Nadal won his opening match at the Cincinnati Masters tennis tournament 2010 after thrashing Taylor Dent in a two setter clash on Wednesday. The final match score remained 6-2, 7-5. The Spaniard dominated right from the beginning and in the end recorded his thirty-fifth win in the last thirty-seven matches.
Rafa had his serve broken only on one occasion in the match held at the Cincinnati tennis club. Commenting on his opponent’s game after the match he said, “Dent made a couple of mistakes in the start and as a result he couldn’t make a comeback. I took full advantage of his weaknesses”. All the top seed contenders including Nadal received a first round bye, so their opening matches during the second round provided them a chance to become familiar with the quick surfaces in Cincinnati. Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and Nadal were of the view that the surface is extremely quick if compared to Toronto, where Murray had hammered Federer in the final battle held on Sunday. “Getting accustomed to such conditions within a short period of time is quite tough and therefore the first match is always very important”, said Nadal.
In another action, the Serbian Djokovic also won his match after getting the better of Victor Troicki in a total of two sets. His final match score was 6-3, 7-5. Djokovic after his win said, “It was extremely hot out there. I react a bit differently in heat as compared to others on the court. I also suffer from some respiratory issues but still I tried my best to survive and thankfully won the match in the end”.
The 2nd ranked Federer also won his match against Denis Istomin who withdrew due to his foot injury within the twenty eighth minute. The Uzbek’s retirement from the match helped Federer reach the next round comfortably. Federer, in his comments after the match said, “It’s the right time to recapture my lost form”.
The 23-year old Murray defeated Jeremy Chardy after a tough battle in three sets. His final match score was 6-3, 6-7 (3), 6-2. Murray started off quite well but Chardy also played quite aggressively during the second set. The Scott while commenting on his opponent’s game afterwards said, “Chardy’s game has really improved over the last few months. I felt a little uncomfortable during the second set when he smashed a couple of big hits”.
The American tennis player, Mardy Fish managed the tournament’s biggest upset till now by knocking out his eight seeded opponent Fernando Verdasco in a total of two sets. His final match score remained 7-6 (1), 7-6 (4).
