Cincinnati Masters 2010: Roger Federer successfully defends his title
The Swiss tennis maestro, Roger Federer won the 2010 Cincinnati Masters title after knocking down his American opponent Mardy Fish in a total of three sets on Sunday. The final match score was 6-7 (5), 7-6 (1), 6-4. The title came as the fourth Masters crown of his career.
Fish did well to keep it tight till the end; however the big man played a better game without any question. Federer after the match commented, “Maybe I was more fit than him in today’s match and that definitely helped me in playing a better game of tennis.”
As a result of this victory, the Fed Express also ended his losing streak of three straight championship finals, capturing his very first Masters title since Cincinnati back in 2009. His sixty third career trophy also tied Bjorn Borg for fifth spot in the Open Era. The former top ranked American, Pete Sampras is at number four with sixty four titles where as Jimmy Connors enjoys the record with a total of one hundred and nine titles in his career.
Roger Federer took a time period of two hours and forty minutes to successfully defend his ATP Cincinnati Masters title of this season on Sunday. The credit goes to the American for extending the match till the third set and giving a tough time to the 29-year-old Federer on the court beyond any measure of speculations.
Mardy Fish had gone through a knee surgery in September back in 2009 and then came back once again with an entirely different approach and lost a total of thirty pounds and as a result gained a lot of pace on the court.
Federer on the other hand, made his way into the final battle after playing only two complete matches of the tournament. He was on court for just a period of twenty eight minutes in his first match of the Cincinnati Masters tennis tournament against Denis Istomin, who due to his ankle injury withdrew from the match. In his next match of the championship, the second ranked tennis player, Roger Federer didn’t even step into the court as Philipp Kohlschreiber dropped out as a result of his shoulder injury.
Federer advanced through his next two matches comfortably, winning each in a total of two sets.
The 28-year-old American is undoubtedly going through the best phase of his career and stands at 17-2 since last month with trophies at Newport as well as Atlanta. He had triumphed in five consecutive matches against top ten players, improving his game with each set.
Fish has previously made his way into the finals of two Masters event including his Cincinnati battle back in 2003 against one of his close friends Andy Roddick, however lost on both occasions.
 “I desperately want to register my name in the pages of history with a big title win or something of the sort. It was a perfect chance for me however I sadly lost in the end”, said Fish after the match.
The Swiss after capturing his 2010 Cincinnati Masters title said, “I have been performing well over the last few weeks and today’s victory once again proved that I am in good shape. It feels great that I am getting paid for all my hard work since my grass court Grand Slam quarter final loss this season at the All England Club.”
In the doubles match, Mike and Bob Bryan won their sixty fourth career doubles trophy at Cincinnati, after ousting Max Mirnyi and Mahesh Bhupathi in a total of two sets. The final match score was 6-3, 6-4.
