Cincinnati Masters 2010: Top seeded Nadal upset by Marcos Baghdatis
The top seeded Spaniard tennis player from the men’s side, Rafael Nadal was defeated by Marcos Baghdatis. The unseeded player defeated the World number one in the quarterfinal round of the ATP Cincinnati Masters tennis tournament 2010 on Friday. The final match score was 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
Rafael Nadal committed a total of thirty unforced errors during the first set of the match on Friday. The twentieth ranked tennis player from Cyprus, Marcos Baghdatis claimed his first victory in seven clashes against the top seeded Nadal. Victory came when the Spaniard smashed a forehand into the net for his thirty-fifth unforced error of yesterday’s clash.
The Cypriot tennis player after his quarterfinal victory said, “I made full use of the chances provided to me in today’s match and at last managed to beat the top ranked Rafael Nadal. Although I had chances in my previous clashes as well however I didn’t use them good enough to win the matches”.
Baghdatis, who concluded with a total of eighteen aces to Rafa’s four and committed just twenty -two errors, considered his serves more vital in comparison to Rafael’s miscues.
“I served quite well today”, said Baghdatis after the match. “My over all game was also much better as I played more aggressively. I was completely aware of the fact that Nadal is not going to give me the victory so I had to go there on the court and fetch it”.
Rafael Nadal after this loss blamed his balky backhand as one of the major causes of his failure.
“My game still needs to improve without any doubt”, said Nadal. “I have to constantly improve my game and that’s what I am doing in order to boost up my confidence level as far as my backhand is concerned. My forehand on the other hand is quite effective without any question however I still had a couple of unforced errors. For a variety of reasons, I fought poorly in a crucial match today”.
Marcos Baghdatis, as a result of this victory has reached the semi final round of the ATP Cincinnati Master’s tennis tournament 2010. He will next face the Swiss tennis ace, Roger Federer as his semi final opponent at Cincinnati.
In other action on Friday, the Scot Andy Murray, who was participating in his eighth afternoon clash in a total of ten days, was thrashed by an unseeded American, Mardy Fish in a total of three sets. The final score of the match that lasted for a time period of two hours and fifty-six minutes was 6-7 (7), 6-1, 7-6 (5).
Mardy Fish as a result of this victory will face his fellow compatriot, Andy Roddick. In what will be the Championship’s first all American semi final battle since Roddick was defeated by Andre Agassi back in 2004. The ninth seeded America, Andy Roddick downed the second seeded Serbian, Novak Djokovic in a two setter clash on Friday. The final match score was 6-4, 7-5.
Djokovic fired a total of twenty-eight winners to Andy’s fifteen. However, the Serbian also committed a total of twenty-nine unforced errors to Roddick’s fifteen while falling down for the fourth consecutive time in their face to face clashes.
“I honestly played an extremely bad match today”, Djokovic said. “Whenever I was required to play well, I committed mistakes, particularly on my forehand side. He definitely played better than me in today’s match”, he added.
The thirteenth ranked American, Andy Roddick on the other hand, while commenting on Novak’s game said, “He perhaps didn’t play at his very best in today’s match. He was missing those balls he usually wouldn’t”.
Last year’s winner, Roger Federer on the other hand, at last played a complete match, kicking out his sixth seeded opponent Nikolay Davydenko in a total of two sets. The final match score was 6-4, 7-5.
