Cincinnati Reds' Joey Votto admits nervousness in first appearance since July 15 – MLB News
The Cincinnati Reds' first baseman Joey Votto admitted on Wednesday, September 5, that his first appearance since knee surgery was a little apprehensive for him. Votto had 2-for-3 in the game against the Philadelphia Phillies which the Reds lost 6-2.
"I was a little apprehensive. I did go in gingerly," Votto said. "I have had a few slides that have given me trouble. I have to get over that, and I will at some point."
However, the encouraging development for the Reds solid offence is the return of this accomplished slugger. He seems to have passed his first knee test facing seemingly big odds. He, after all, had a procedure on August 11 just when it was expected that he might get back in the line-up in mid-August.
The three rehab games that Votto had played were vital in determining his fitness and form. The extended period of being out of the line-up can be struggling for any player, especially an important player like Votto.
He said, "I had all that energy and fire inside of me that I had to sit on for that extended period of time. I wanted to get out there. I didn't really have a problem with giving away at-bats before, but that time off really hit home that you don't know what's going to happen next. That's reason enough not to take anything for granted and get after it."
His appearance on Wednesday prompted cheer among the crowd which welcomed him warmly. Standing ovation was witnessed when he stepped into the batter’s box. This was an overwhelming experience for a player who has been instrumental in the team’s success this season.
The Reds now occupy the first spot in the National League Central and seem all set to comfortably make it into the playoffs. Votto will be a key player in this regard, whose return brought a wave of happiness in the club and for the fans alike.
As the season approaches end and playoffs near, Votto will have central focus in the team to keep the offence energetic and aggressive.
