Cincinnati Reds' Joey Votto goes 2-for-3 in his first appearance since knee surgery – MLB News
The Cincinnati Reds' first baseman Joey Votto made his first appearance on Wednesday, September 5, facing the Philadelphia Phillies. Votto who was out of the line-up due to left knee surgery he had on July 17 and then another procedure on August 11 made a good comeback.
His Wednesday’s appearance saw the first baseman get 2-for-3 with a walk. Votto’s solid display of game-play dismissed all the impressions that it might take him a considerably long time to regain his fitness and the magical form he had had prior to his injury.
Although the Cincinnati Reds lost Wednesday’s game to Philadelphia Phillies 6-2, the return of All-Star first baseman Joey Votto was a positive development for the club. Hitting .346 with 14 homers and 49 RBIs this season, Votto had a commanding presence on the field.
"Joey was fine," Dusty Baker said after the conclusion of the game. "I think those rehab days really helped him. I asked him in the seventh -- I was thinking of taking him out at that point -- and he said he was feeling OK. That's [a] big [day] tomorrow, a day off for him and his legs. He'll be ready on Friday."
Votto’s return will add more strength to the offence which in his absence performed really well. However, what was a little discomforting for the Reds was the fact that they ended 3-4 with the Phillies this year.
They were unable to win any series against the Phillies just when they have been able to overcome virtually every opponent.
Nonetheless, the likes of Votto and Jay Bruce can completely alter the outlook of the season for the Reds this year. Bruce is now 10-for-21 in his last six games with five homers and 12 RBIs.
"I'm just trying to do the best I can, honestly," Bruce said. "I try not to think too much about it or look into it too deeply. It's one of those things that hopefully I can help the team win here down the stretch and get to the postseason."
In the days to come, along with the exceptionally solid rotation and bullpen, the Reds will make things difficult for opponents with their equally strong offence.
