Cincinnati Reds' Joey Votto plays his first rehab game – MLB News
Cincinnati Reds are expected to activate the All-Star first baseman Joey Votto this weekend as he appeared in his first rehab game on Tuesday, August 28. The rehab assignment at Class A Dayton – which was the first of the two that he is supposed to play, saw Votto remain 0-for-1.
Votto’s appearance in Tuesday’s game was looked forward to considering the significance and the place he retains in the team. This was the first ever game for him after July 15 when he was pulled out following the issues with his meniscus cartilage in his left knee.
Joey was obviously happy with the development.
"That I'm able to play tonight speaks to the progress I've made," said Votto. "I'm happy that I am finally back out on the field playing with the team and I'm able to play in a game. I'm not 100 percent yet, but usually when you do your rehab games, you aren't."
Votto had to undergo surgery on his left knee last month and it was expected that he might start playing in August. But that did not materialise after the minor complication that he had with his knee, prompting a second procedure.
Joey will now have his second rehab game to play on Wednesday. If all goes well for the All-Star first baseman, he will be brought back in the line-up, ready to play this weekend.
All this while, the club has shown extraordinary care instead of rushing to activate Votto. Having consistently performed but been out of line-up since July 16, Reds' manager Dusty Baker said the club had to do what was best.
"Then you'd have to send somebody out and you couldn't get them back for x-amount of time," Reds' manager Dusty Baker said. "Every game is important, but at the same time, you have to do what's important, what's best for the team. I'd like to have Joey back yesterday if I could get him."
Reds will be playing the Houston Astros this weekend. The possible featuring of the first baseman will be an exciting news for the club and the fans alike.
