Cincinnati Reds' Joey Votto unlikely to return next Tuesday after minor knee procedure – MLB News
The Cincinnati Reds on Saturday, August 11, were in for another surprise as it was announced that the All-Star first baseman Joey Votto is unlikely to have any start this month. Out from the team since July 16, Votto had undergone arthroscopic knee surgery and was all set to play in August.
That did not transpire, though. The news broke out after Votto was said to have complained of soreness following the sliding drills on Wednesday. It is pertinent to mention here that he was almost done with rehab schedule.
Nonetheless, after the complaints, an MRI was taken that is said to have shown a loose piece of cartilage floating in his left knee. The Cincinnati Reds head athletic trainer Paul Lessard talked about it in the presser regarding the new development.
"He was having some pain and we sent him back to get a new MRI and get re-examined," trainer Paul Lessard said. "They found basically a little chunk of cartilage floating in his knee, so [Dr. Kremchek] went in and removed it. The whole procedure only took about six minutes, so he's going to stay back in Cincinnati with the physical therapists until we get back home."
Votto was previously likely to appear in Tuesday’s game scheduled against the New York Mets. But that seems quite unlikely now given his injury status now. There - however, is a likelihood of his return in seven to 10 days.
But that of course is a timetable whose fate will only be known after ten days as to whether or not Votto feels fine enough to start playing. The team manager Dusty Baker had his perspective to offer on the issue.
"One thing about Joey is that he knows his body," Baker said. "He's not going to say something's wrong just to say it.”
It cannot be denied that the Reds' manager wanted the player back on the track before the commencement of the next series whereby the Reds would need powerful hitting. Nonetheless, the team has to rely on other players in the offence, especially Brandon Phillips, to do the needed.
