Cincinnati Reds' Joey Votto will have another rehab game on Monday – MLB News
The Cincinnati Reds on Sunday, September 2, stated that the All-Star first baseman Joey Votto will have another rehabilitation game on Monday with Triple-A Louisville. This comes days after it was reported that Votto might have a regular game against the Houston Astros.
That did not materialise. The player who had undergone knee surgery on July 17 had to go through another procedure on August 11. He has since not been able to play any regular game.
Being the most assertive and prolific slugger of the Reds, all eyes are set on his early return. But another rehabilitation game might well insinuate that things are not going his way for now. The team manager Dusty Baker said the club will hear him first prior to making any decision.
"We'll wait and see if he thinks he's ready," Baker said. "We've got a spot for him."
In his second appearance that was on Saturday, he was 1-for-3 with Class-A Dayton. The first game saw the player go 1-for-5.
His injury and subsequent surgery had set alarm bells in the club which was dependent on him given the fact that he was instrumental in charging the offence. But the Reds maintained a graceful 32-15 record in his absence.
The manager also spoke of the Houston wherein he has come as both a player and the manager for last 40 years. He had started playing from the same place when he began his career.
"I know a lot of people here," Baker said. "I hit my first home run here. This is where I started playing every day."
Having started his career with the Atlanta Braves, he had hit a .297 batting average with 13 homers at the Astrodome. However, he recalls the city was not as big as it is today.
"It wasn't nearly this big when I first started coming here," Baker said.
All said, the Reds, for now, are in a comfortable position, remaining at the top of the National League Central. It will be interesting to see how they maintain this record and make the most use of it once they are in the playoffs.
