Cincinnati Reds' Johnny Cueto incapacitates Chicago Cubs' offence with 3-0 win – MLB News
Johnny Cueto on Sunday, August 12, pitched eight scoreless innings for a 3-0 win over the Cincinnati Reds against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. Cueto outmanoeuvred the Cubs' hitters to pave the way for the Reds’ third consecutive win, to end the four-game series with 3-1.
"I was feeling really good with all my pitches," Cueto said. "I was locating my pitches really well."
Cueto further improved his record, having 15 wins this season, losing only six games. He now has a tie with New York Mets’ R. A. Dickey who has also won as many games. But the win is significant for the Reds which had lost their previous five games after the first game of this series.
Brooks Raley of the Chicago Cubs, the starter who was recently promoted after Matt Garza’s injury, pitched relatively well, but could not quite hold his ground. In his six-inning spell, Raley allowed three runs, allowing five hits.
But Raley – who indeed wanted a backup support, did not get it from the Cubs’ offence which once again failed to live up to the expectations. The credit would obviously go to the starter Johnny Cueto.
"He was in trouble quite a few times, but got a couple key double plays," Baker said. "Johnny got behind quite a bit but he managed to get back into the count which is the sign of a good pitcher that you can get out of trouble. That was a nice shutout for Johnny."
Jay Bruce hit a two-run homer in the fifth to give the Reds 2-0 lead, at a time where there seemed a drought of runs. Ryan Ludwick followed with a solo homer in the sixth to make it 3-0, thereby leaving things for Cueto to manage.
Once Johnny Cueto was done with impressive spell, closer Aroldis Chapman came to pitch the ninth. Chapman then earned 28th save of the season, allowing only a hit to wrap up the game with 3-0 victory for the Reds, ending the four-game series with 3-1 for the Reds, keeping them atop the National League Central ranking.
