Cincinnati Reds' Johnny Cueto sets new record – MLB News
As the Cincinnati Reds swept the series against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday, August 28, Johnny Cueto is all set to achieve new heights in the game with a new record that he set with his 17th win this season.
After 1940, when Reds' Bucky Walters made a majestic record of 22 wins in the season and 2.48 ERA, Cueto is the first Cincinnati Reds' pitcher to make it to his 17th. Given the 28 more regular games and more in the playoffs, Cueto can set a new record.
He has been leading with a 2.48 ERA in the National League, surpassing all other rivals. It was against the Arizona Diamondbacks that he scored his last win.
"The last outing, I was feeling really well. I couldn't go harder than that," Cueto said. "It was the other way around with this outing. I was really tired and really heavy today. But that's how things go in this game."
Ever since the beginning of the season, there have been 19 games wherein this pitcher has not allowed any homer. That is a record in itself, one behind Gio Gonzalez. The Reds seem all poised to do something extraordinary this season with the set of accomplished players they have.
One such asset for the Reds is Cueto who can on any given day, devastate any offence with the effectiveness and power that he brings as a starter.
"He's good, man. You've got to give him credit," said D-backs catcher Miguel Montero. "He pretty much never gives in and he's a tough guy to face because when you go out there looking for something it's like he's reading your mind. It's like he never throws you what you're looking for and it kind of screws you up a little bit."
Cueto is now a favourite candidate for the Cy Young Award. It was previously Aroldis Chapman who said he would like to see Cueto win the prestigious Award. Given his consistent performance, there is an increased likelihood that it is Cueto who will have this honour to his credit, winning a glory not only for himself but for the Reds a well.
