Cincinnati Reds' Jose Arredondo out with swelling in his arm – MLB News
The Cincinnati Reds' manager Dusty Baker on Sunday, July 22, stated that the team’s reliever Jose Arredondo will not be available for next few games. The decision was made after the Reds had to remove the player following the Saturday’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers wherein he got a ball off his right forearm, causing swelling.
While there apparently was no big problem in playing the reliever, the team is in a very cautious mode these days. Given the fact that the Reds have fared well this season, staying atop the rank, they cannot risk losing a player who is actively contributing to the team’s wins.
Saturday’s game was all the more positive for the Reds with their win over the Brewers, paving the way for the series win.
Given the fact that Arredondo is a regular part of the bullpen, the team thinks giving them rest won’t significantly affect the ballclub.
"I imagine he'll be sore," Baker said. "I'm planning on him not being available. We are relatively whole now. We're in decent shape even without him."
As for Arredondo himself, he is quite confident that he will be alright soon. "I'll be alright," Arredondo said. "It might just take a couple days."
Arredondo has so far appeared in 42 games this season, maintaining a decent 2.29 ERA with four wins to his credit. Having pitched 39.1 innings, he has had 45 strike-outs, allowing only 14 runs all this while.
As for the swelling of the arm, there were no reports whether the team had gone for an X-ray or MRI of the player. Apparently, the decision to give him a few days rest was after a look at the swelling. But apparently, the incident has its severity.
There is no denying that even in Arredondo’s absence, there is nothing potentially worrying for the Reds as a whole given the talented pool of relievers available to them. Nonetheless, with three-year experience, the player brings with himself force and command to cause discomfort for the rival teams.
The team will be looking to Arredondo's early return, hopefully within the next few days.
