Cincinnati Reds' Scott Rolen expected to be returning soon – MLB News
The Cincinnati Reds' manager Dusty Baker said on Monday, September 10, that Scott Rolen might return soon, a week after he had some problem in his back. The third baseman is out of the line-up since September 4 because of this injury.
Scott Rolen’s absence initially was being feared as a potential setback to the offence given consistency he has demonstrated in keeping the offence functioning. But Todd Frazier, who had come to replace him, performed well, something that the team manager alluded to.
"He's better. There's a chance he can play real soon," Reds' manager Dusty Baker said. "[Todd] Frazier has done a good job, all the guys have done a good job. But I mean, Scotty is our leader on the field. It's just a little different when your leader is not out there."
But beyond the replacement and all other considerations and fears, the Reds look to Rolen as the leader. He has undeniably proved his instrumentality as a leader throughout these years, a fact that Rolen acknowledges.
In fact there comes glowing praise for the third baseman.
"Most teams, especially most good teams, have a leader," Baker said. "Leaders are not appointed by anybody, they're just sort of anointed by the players on the team on how they gravitate towards him, how they go to him for advice. They emulate how he plays, how he goes about his business as a professional.”
For two disc protrusions in his lower back and to relieve it, Rolen has gone for anti-inflammatory medication over an epidural injection.
The Reds are upping their defence now as the playoffs near. The Reds seem all set to book a spot there quite easily. Therein figures the central role of 37-year-old Rolen, whose experience and effectiveness as a third baseman is always counted upon.
Having appeared in 79 games this season, Rolen has maintained a .244 average, with 33 RBIs and six homers. His career average stands at .281. Baker commented that Rolen might return soon, the Reds will keep their fingers crossed for this player’s appearance given the energy and experience he brings along for the offence.
