Cincinnati Reds' manager hopes Mat Latos will make scheduled start – MLB News
The Cincinnati Reds' manager Dusty Baker said on Tuesday, July 24, that the starter Mat Latos will be fine before the next scheduled start. The starter who sprained his left ankle in Monday’s game against the Houston Astros is to have another start soon.
The Reds are currently relying on the five starters. The fitness of each starter, therefore, holds considerable significance in determining the result of every game.
Latos ended up spraining his left ankle in the games against the Houston Astros on Monday. The pitcher, nonetheless, played a key role in bringing an 8-3 win for the Reds.
That does not seem to have worried the team manager much. He hopes the starter will be back in the lineup sooner than later.
"He should be fine," manager Dusty Baker said. "He looks like a racehorse with the tape on his ankle. Other than that, he said it didn't swell much, which is good."
It was in the fifth inning of the game when Latos injured the ankle. The starter was pitching to Marwin Gonzalez of the Astros and was soon seen limping.
"I felt it the rest of the inning, especially the last couple of pitches," Latos said Monday. "But it's fine now."
As mentioned before, the team has relied on five pitchers this season. Much to the satisfaction of the Reds, there has been no major injury that would have plagued the Reds. All this while, the starters have pitched regularly, adding strength to the Reds’ defence.
Mat Latos, for one, has appeared in 20 games this season, pitching two complete games with 4.30 ERA. So far he has a record of 8-3, having had 109 strike-outs in 119.1 innings, having given up 61 runs.
He remains eighth in the National League ranking in wins with .727 while having occupied the second position in complete games.
Latos’ return, therefore, will be awaited by the team-mates as he brings with himself command, power and experience to add strength to the team’s defence, at a time when the Reds seem all poised to make it to the postseason with their great performance.
