Cincinnati Reds' players fail to win any NL Gold Award – MLB News
While Tuesday had a lot of surprises in terms of the announcement of National League Gold Glove Awards, none of the Cincinnati Reds' players could obtain the prestigious Award. Interestingly, the Reds had won nominations for six, but ended up not getting any Awards.
Those who won the National League Gold Glove Awards for their respective fields were Yadier Molina of the St. Louis Cardinals, Adam LaRoche of the Washington Nationals, Darwin Barney of the Chicago Cubs, Chase Headley of the San Diego Padres, Carlos Gonzalez of Colorado Rockies, Andrew McCutchen of the Pittsburgh Pirates, Jason Heyward of the Atlanta Braves and Mark Buehrle of the Miami Marlins.
Brandon Phillips, the Cincinnati Reds' second baseman, was one of the strongest candidates for the Gold Glove Award but it was young Darwin Barney who actually stole the show, with his 141-game errorless streak in 2012 Major League Baseball season.
Barney had .997 fielding percentage compared to Phillips’ .992. But there was no denying that Phillips showed defensive and offensive skills at a time when the team needed it most, helping them to get to the National League Division Series.
His highlight grabbing plays were numerous. The fact that he came to take centre stage just when first baseman Joey Votto was out of the line-up due to knee injury set him apart. In the last four years, he had won Gold Glove Award thrice.
For many, Barney’s winning might have come as a surprise. Be that as it may, Barney statistically prevailed at the end.
"From top to bottom, you have to continue to work on your routine plays and being consistent," he said. "You know you're not going to run into a streak defensively every single year -- or I guess not very often at all. You want to be as consistent as you can and keep working. You can't be satisfied.”
With the results, the Reds will obviously try to stage a comeback in the upcoming season to not only win glory as a team, but also individually. Brandon Phillips, for the most part, will be key player to realise that goal.
