Cincinnati Reds Brandon Phillips back after the cramp in his left calf – MLB News
The Cincinnati Reds’ second baseman Brandon Phillips will remain part of team’s lineup up as the cramp in his left calf did not prove to be too serious and worrying. As a result, Brandon Phillips did appear in Monday’s, July 30, game scheduled against the
San Diego Padres.
Earlier, there were fears that Brandon Phillips too might fall into the list of injured players, something that the Reds would not be able to afford given the fact that All-Star Joey Votto is already out for over two weeks now.
Votto who had undergone knee surgery has yet to make his return. In his absence, it is Phillips who has done remarkably well to fill the vacuum Votto has left behind. In a circumstance like this, Phillips’ presence in the team would be greatly reassuring
for the team.
"I'm good. I'm playing today," the Cincinnati Reds third baseman Brandon Phillips said.
Dusty Baker, who had earlier seemed a bit worried about Phillips’ fitness, after the cramp in the left calf, looked content with Phillips’ return.
"It was what we thought it was," Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "It's easy to get cramps up there, especially if you're not drinking enough water, or if you're drinking alcohol, which Brandon doesn't drink at all. So you know it had to be him not drinking
water."
However, his appearance on Monday lacked the power and energy characteristic of this player. Phillips remained 0-for-5 in the game against San Diego Padres, which eventually ended with the Reds disconcerting 11-5 loss, something which was not expected.
The Reds were to increase their game-winning streak, which was 10, but failed to do so in the face of powerful show by the Padres in the game.
Nonetheless, Phillips return will be good for the upcoming games especially when he has performed consistently in the recent past.
Having appeared in 95 games so far, Phillips has maintained .296 average in his 368 at-bats, having had 109 hits, scoring 61 RBIs coupled with 12 home runs. Tuesday’s game will be watched with more gusto to see if Phillips can add to the team’s strength.
