Cincinnati Reds’ Brandon Phillips exits Sunday's game, but hopes to return on Monday – MLB Update
The Cincinnati Reds' second baseman Brandon Phillips had to leave the game in the middle on Sunday, July 29, due to the cramp in his left calf. The game against the Colorado Rockies saw the player exit in the bottom of the fifth inning.
According to the team manager, Brandon Phillips had a serious cramp. But he hopes it is not just too sore for the player.
"I know he had a very serious cramp," Reds' manager Dusty Baker said. "I'm hoping it's just that. When you're in this altitude and perhaps you haven't drunk enough water, that can certainly happen up here. I'm just hoping it's not too sore and he'll be all right tomorrow."
Brandon Phillips has literally been the backbone of the Reds’ offence lately ever since the injury of All-Star Joey Votto and subsequent knee surgery. In Sunday’s game, Phillips was replaced by Wilson Valdez.
Brandon was 2-for-3, with one RBI to his credit, when he left the game. The Cincinnati Reds won the game by 7-2, taking their winning streak to 10 games now. Phillips, during all these games has been excellence-personified.
Since the knee surgery that has rendered Votto unable to play, Phillips has been an incredible replacement for the player. In his last 13 games, apart from his seven-game hitting streak, he has maintained an exceptionally great .383 batting average.
Sunday’s cramp in his left calf does not worry the player much. "It's all right. The knot is still right there," Phillips said after the team’s win. "I felt it yesterday but I thought it was just going to go away."
Asked about how he was doing now, he said he felt like going out and competing. "Right now, I feel like I can go out there and play. That's just how I am," Phillips said. "I'm ready to play [Monday]. I think I'm going to play. I think it's just something that happened this series."
While the team manager may be a little worried, which is understandable, Phillips' striking the positive note means he is alright and will be available for the team in Monday’s game.
