Cincinnati Reds’ Brandon Phillips focused on game, not contract – MLB News
The Cincinnati Reds’ second baseman Brandon Phillips on Thursday, January 26, expressed his ignorance about the progress on the contract extension between his agent and the team. Phillips and the Reds are involved in protracted negotiations on the future
of the deal that the two intend to have.
While saying he had no idea what’s happening on that front, Brandon Phillips did, however, say he was not worrying about it much. Reports have it that the second baseman wants a long-term deal while the Reds have kept the cards close to their chest in this
regard.
"I have no idea. My agent hasn't called and told me anything about it," Phillips said about progress on his contract. "The best thing about it is I'm really not worrying about it. They're doing a good job of making the team better. I will have my day. I'm
not really tripping about it. If it comes soon, it would be nice. I'm going to have my day, regardless."
The Cincinnati Reds exercised their option of $12 million for him. That option has kept Phillips in the team up until November of this year. Much as it seems an important deal, there have not been talks about it by the Reds themselves.
There have been speculations about the nature of the talks. The Reds might not be willing to take the long route as far as keeping the player is concerned. However, given the fact that Phillips has achieved a number of things in his career, the Reds may
not let the player go easily.
Brandon Phillips also chose to leave it to his agent to process the deal. "I'll leave it up to my agent. That's one thing I can't control," Phillips said. "I hope it gets done. I cannot do it for them.”
Phillips had the distinction of winning the National League Gold Glove Award last year, becoming one of the Reds whose contribution to the team was invaluable. With a .300 batting average, Phillips retains his strong position in the team. It remains to be
seen how the Reds take things farther in November when the deal ends.
