Cincinnati Reds’ Dusty Baker impressed by new prospect Daniel Corcino – MLB News
The Cincinnati Reds’ manager Dusty Baker appeared impressed on Monday, March 5, by the young prospect Daniel Corcino. At a time when the Reds inarguably need strong arms to solidify defence, Corcino is the best discovery to have come to the team.
For now he is the non-roster player in the Reds’ camp and has appeared against the Seattle Mariners’ Minor Leaguers. Superbly fit and equipped with strong arms, as a young pitcher he seems a fascinating discovery for the Reds.
That is what the team manager Dusty Baker recognises as well.
"I know he gets after it," Baker said before the game. "You've got to calm him down, because he throws the ball 100 mph in every drill. He's getting after it. He's first whenever we do our warm-up drills in the morning. It's refreshing really. I told him,
'don't worry about keeping up with everybody else. Just do your thing.'"
Interestingly, there is some striking resemblance that this young pitcher bears to that of Johnny Cueto, the 26-year-old starter of the Cincinnati Reds. Corcino, coming from the Dominican Republic, will surely be a Cueto in-the-making if he gets an uninterrupted
and continued chance.
The fact that he had a wonderful season the past year in the Minor Leagues with a 3.42 ERA serves as evidence of the potential he carries. Corcino had 11 wins to his credit in the 26 games that he appeared in Class A Dayton.
His countryman, Johnny Cueto, is the player Corcino always plays with on the field. For Baker, thus, he is “Cueto Jr.”
"He's always playing catch with Cueto," Baker said. "He hangs with Cueto. I call him "Cueto Jr." He's pretty proud of that too, really."
Cueto, on the other hand, hopes that Corcino will soon get elevated to play in the Major League as he has got the talent.
With the bright prospect of Corcino playing for the Reds, the team can certainly be ever more imbued with confidence to become a stronger defensive side in the Division, making it possible to put a great show in order to get to the postseason games.
