Cincinnati Reds Joey Votto goes for first baseball activity since July 17 knee surgery – MLB Update
The Cincinnati Reds All-Star first baseman Joey Votto played catch and took some throws on Monday, July 30, almost a couple of weeks after his knee surgery. The arthroscopic surgery has rendered the player in the disabled list for a month; and Monday’s rehab
session was in effect the first baseball activity.
He underwent the surgery on July 17th to repair the torn meniscus in his left knee. His absence, to state the obvious, was going to significantly impact the performance of the team since Votto has virtually been the backbone of Reds’ offence.
Monday’s activity, although making no major strides, does – however, come as a good news for the Reds, and the player himself as he is finally making improvement. Nonetheless, Votto has to wait patiently for a complete recovery.
"I feel like I'm making subtle improvements every day," Votto said. "If it was pain-free, I would be playing right now."
Votto did also stress the point that he was doing everything to get on the plate as soon as possible. At a time when his team is doing extraordinarily well, Votto’s coming back will be a major morale booster, and enhance the chances of the team to exert
themselves more confidently.
Only yesterday did the Reds take their winning streak to 10 games, something that Votto regrets missing by not being in the roster.
"I've done nothing but try to get back as soon as possible," Votto said. "It can be difficult sitting on the sidelines and watching the team play well or play poorly. Obviously, I think they'd like me to stay out another 10 games so they can have a 20-game
win streak. It's difficult watching the games and not being able to play. I miss playing so I do everything I can to put myself in a position where I can play as soon as possible.”
For now, questions are being asked about his possible return. From what it appears, no final word can be given about Votto’s return since there is not 100 percent improvement so far. The day the Reds ascertain that Votto is fit, they will happily activate
the player.
