Cincinnati Reds’ Joey Votto on 15-day disabled list for now – MLB News
The Cincinnati Reds on Monday, July 16, were met with shocking news of the first baseman Joey Votto’s possible departure for three to four weeks due to arthroscopic surgery. The need for surgery arose after it was discovered that the player had a torn meniscus in his left knee.
Cincinnati make further announcements on the status of the player by Tuesday. However, from what it is known, the emergence of this news has not only shocked the team, but also the All-Star player himself.
With whatever has transpired now, team manager Dusty Baker wants all the players to do their job with ever more rigour and effectiveness given the nature of the problem confronting the team.
“Very tough news on Joey," Reds' manager Dusty Baker said after the unexpected 5-3 loss to Arizona Diamondbacks. "We've got time to get him fixed, and hopefully other guys pick him up in his absence. Joey is in great shape and heals very quickly. We knew it was something, especially with the fact he wasn't healing. We just have to tighten our belts and everyone else has a job to do."
The player had to undergo an MRI exam on Monday that brought about the result of the tear. It was on June 29 when the first baseman injured his knee while sliding into third base. The game, being played against the San Francisco Giants, finally saw the player leave the ground and miss the following two games.
Since then, as could be easily seen, there was a slump in his performance. Thus, the MRI and now the 15-day disabled list had almost become inevitable. In it, the first baseman sees the interest of the team to rest, given the challenge afterwards.
"It is in my best interest and in the best interest of the team to do it now, so that I can be healthy during the last two months of the pennant race," Votto said.
How long does it take the player to regain his fitness and form is something that cannot be stated with certitude. However, the sooner he returns, the better it is for the Reds.
