Cincinnati Reds’ Joey Votto wants nothing short of making it to World Series – MLB News
Cincinnati Reds' first baseman Joey Votto said on Monday, September 24, that the club’s goal is to book a spot in the World Series this year. The Reds won the National League Central Division title on Saturday and are all set to make it to the playoffs.
However, emboldened and solid as they feel, the goal is to go beyond the playoffs. Reds have not won a World Series since 1990 as this year they have a fantastic opportunity to realise their dream.
"We've played very successful baseball this year, and we've competed with the best teams at a very high level," first baseman Joey Votto said. "We've done a lot of winning this year, but I think anything but setting the World Series as our standard would be selling ourselves short. Whether we achieve that or not is kind of irrelevant, but that's our goal."
Stiffening competition has just brought the best out of the Reds this year. Even though their key players fell victim to the injuries occasionally throughout the season, nowhere was their consistency seemed vulnerable and they kept their glorious march going.
The last time the Reds made a spot in the postseason games in 2010, it did not quite go as was planned and they lost it to the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League Division Series. That is something the Reds would not obviously want to repeat this year.
The performance here is to be stellar if the Reds intend to make their mark and they vow to do that. Given the presence of experienced players in the Reds' line-up, there is no denying that they can achieve it this time round without repeating the mistakes committed back in 2010.
"Now we've been there, and hopefully we can learn from the mistakes we made in 2010 and go out there and have a good time, and just try to get as many wins as possible," second baseman Brandon Phillips said.
With the 2012 regular season coming to an end and the playoffs right around the corner, it will be interesting to see whether the Reds will be able to maintain their winning momentum in the playoffs.
