Cincinnati Reds’ Johnny Cueto put another strong show
The Cincinnati Reds starter Johnny Cueto had another strong spell on Friday, March 30, to prove not only his ascendancy but also the effectiveness. Cueto who has been slated for the Opening Day game had his last Cactus League game appearance.
Playing against the Cleveland Indians, Cueto hurled six innings to give up two and four hits. The vigorous and strong-built starter had three strikeouts to his credit, allowing only walk to wrap up the game.
His Friday’s performance was, as the team manager, put pretty good. While he himself must be soaking in satisfaction himself owing to the strong performance, his ability to go for 98 pitches in a supposedly Cactus League workout was indeed a treat to watch.
"Cueto threw the ball pretty good," Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "He threw 98 pitches after he had 89 last time. He just got a couple of balls up to guys that can hit the ball out of the ballpark."
While Cueto himself felt happy, declaring himself ready for the Opening Day game, it will be interesting to observe how he goes about against the Miami Marlins on 5th April.
The starter has other strong fellow pitchers in the rotation that will indeed lend credible support and strength to the Reds in the league.
On the other hand, the young players were seen having workout on the field on Friday. For the team manager, playing for the young players is better than sitting on the bench and spot playing.
"Just like when I got sent to the Minor Leagues, I didn't really agree with it. But it was the correct thing," Baker said. "It's better for some players, younger players, to go play instead of sitting on the bench and spot playing -- especially when you're
seeing improvement from some of the guys."
With the wonderfully formidable and redoubtable show in the Cactus League, the Reds have made their intentions known to the rivals. The agile players available at the disposal will enable the Reds to have the lead over the competitors with a striking fashion;
something that the fans have sorely missed for long.
