Cincinnati Reds’ Johnny Cueto’s fate for rest of the season unknown – MLB News
The Cincinnati Reds’ Johnny Cueto strained his right lat muscle under his arm and has cast a shadow over his ability to continue for the rest of the season. On Thursday, September 15 the team doctor once again re-examined the Reds’ starter to determine the
nature of the injury he recently contracted.
Playing against the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday, Cueto had to leave the game early due to the fact that there seemed to be something worrying. Cueto himself was either unsure or potentially perplexed once asked if he thought he could go ahead with pitching.
"I don't know at this point," Cueto said via translator Tomas Vera. "I want to throw but it hurts. I feel sore. It's painful right now. As the doctor told me, I will most likely lose the next outing but we'll see how it progresses to see if I can pitch one
more time."
Although the Cincinnati Reds effortlessly defeated the Chicago Cubs in Wednesday’s game, the team would not have thought of losing such an instrumental player. However, as the series progresses, what is known and will happen is the challenge for the Reds
to erect a well-built defence.
Reds’ Johnny Cueto had started becoming this season’s sensation owing to his brilliant performances. Having had 9-5 with 2.31 ERA in 24 of his games, Cueto was keenly cutting through even the strongest of offences on the field.
While his other contender Clayton Kershaw has led the Majors with a 2.30 ERA, Cueto was all set to turn the tide if he continued playing. However, as Wednesday’s mishap has put him and his record in trouble, he still has hopes for something miraculous to
happen.
"I would like to keep going the way I was doing," Cueto said. "I was battling for the title. I'm among the top three guys. If God decides something different, there is nothing you can do."
The team manager was obviously disturbed by the development. Just when the team had a clear edge on the Chicago Cubs and could well sweep the series, the loss of such an important player comes as no less than a shocking surprise.
For now Cueto is to be given rest. "He's going to skip a start so you at least have nine, or possibly 10, days," Reds’ manager Dusty Baker said.
The team manager has decided to leave everything to the player to decide. If Cueto attains his fitness soon and is comfortable pitching, he will be given an opportunity to unleash his lethal weapon against the rivals.
What is now known is that Cueto will be missing the game on Thursday, September 15.
