Cincinnati Reds’ Mat Latos to make start in second game against Philadelphia Phillies – MLB News
The Cincinnati Reds have slated Mat Latos to start the second game scheduled for Tuesday, September 4, against the Philadelphia Phillies.
Phillies, which have a 1-0 lead in the three-game series are expected to meet tough resistance in the second game.
For now the Reds occupy the top slot in the National League Central with an eight and a half game lead over the rivals. The defeat against the Phillies on Monday might have caused a temporary setback for the team.
One of the added advantages to the Reds this season – wherein they have won more than 80 games so far, is their solid rotation and bullpen. The fact that they have put together a well-built defence uniquely places them to strike.
Latos is one such starter on whom the Reds can safely count upon. Having made 27 starts this season, he has 11-4 record, with two complete games. With 3.79 ERA, he has had 152 strike-outs, allowing 77 runs in 168.2 innings.
While challenges abound, especially after the defeat on Monday, they can nevertheless stage a comfortable comeback given the strong position of the team.
What is important to remember, however, is that Latos has won seven of the last 10 games that he has appeared.
Reds are so strong that even the rival teams cannot help but acknowledge it. Phillies’ veteran outfielder Juan Pierre is one of the players to recognise it.
"Cincinnati is right in the hunt, so we can mess up their thing. That's just the competitive nature. This team has been rolling all year," Pierre said. "This is an opportunity to slow them down and also help us get on track."
The Phillies were one of the team that had won over 100 games the past season. But their playoffs simply collapsed, disallowing them to go ahead. That is something that the Reds will be kieeping in mind as they endeavour to score victory this season.
The performance of Latos on Tuesday will determine the Reds ability to sustain pressure. Monday's defeat is something that the Cincinnati Reds will be hoping is a thing of the past.
