Cincinnati Red’s Mike Leake arrested for stealing shirts at department store – MLB News
In baseball nowadays, it seems that anything is possible. We have legends being charged for perjury, steroid scandals erupting every few days and fans beaten to comma’s in ballparks. The addition of players shoplifting won’t be new compared to the others,
but that is the newest inclusion in Baseball’s Hall of Shame.
The pitcher for the Cincinnati Reds, Mike Leake was arrested on account of a shoplifting charge on Monday. He was accused of stealing six T-shirts from a departmental store by the name of Macy’s. The total value of the shirts comes to $59.88; the total value
of what Leake earns is $425,000, the total value of his signing bonus $2.3 million.
He was arrested a mere two hours before the pitchers for the Reds were expected to come to the Great American Ballpark and practice for their final game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Previously, on Saturday Leake had started the game and the Reds had an
impressive victory of 11-2 over the Pirates.
Leake’s attorney’s have forbid him from discussing the arrest so in a statement Leake apologised "for this distraction," to his family, friends, the fans and the club.
The Reds’ management issued their own separate statement in which they said, "We do not condone behavior of the type alleged, which is wholly inconsistent with the principles of this organization and our community and is detrimental to the positive direction
we seek to follow. When the legal process has been completed, we will handle this matter internally."
A Macy’s spokesperson told media officials that the company had no other comments except for what the police had already said.
Leake is a tremendously talented player, as he was instrumental in helping the Reds obtain the National League Central title. He managed an ERA of 4.23 with a record of 8-4 in 22 starts for the Reds.
Currently, the Reds have been relying on Leake as he is covers for Johnny Cueto and Homer Bailey both of whom are suffering from shoulder injuries. Bailey suffered an inflamed pitching shoulder and has been on the Disabled List since the season began. He
had previously thrown sixty two pitches in five scoreless innings as he played for the Triple-A Louisville.
