Cincinnati Reds’ Nick Masset likely to be part of bullpen in August – MLB News
The Cincinnati Reds pitching coach Bryan Price said on Friday, July 27, that if the reliever Nick Masset regains his form and remains healthy, he may well be part of bullpen in August. Masset who has not played even a single game since the start of the season
is undergoing rehab these days.
"If he's healthy and activated in August, he's got to be able to assume the same responsibilities as anybody else in the bullpen," Price said. "We can't pitch him and then give him two days off because he's still considered a rehab. We don't have that luxury."
Masset’s Friday’s rehab is scheduled for the Arizona League club in Goodyear. He is supposed to pitch an inning. From what it appears, the player has made some advancement as far as the recovery from the shoulder injury is concerned.
The team’s pitching coach seems satisfied with how Masset has fared so far. "It's been good. He's done everything we've asked him to do -- bullpens, live batting practice and has come through them well," said Bryan Price.
What is right now clearly known is that the reliever has to wait for another few games before he is formally cleared for the bullpen. The Reds will be a stronger side if and when he returns. The time period given for his return is of a couple of weeks, which
means Masset will be in the team by August.
Is that certain? It is probably too early to state that. Nonetheless, the pitching coach asserts that the report he has got from Arizona League Reds coach is satisfactory.
"He's shown some resiliency, which is the important part," Price said. "He's probably where you'd hope he would be before his first Spring Training outing."
With the career ERA of 3.78, Masset was supposed to be an asset for the team this season. However, much to the chagrin of the Reds, he was unable to make any appearance the whole season due to the shoulder injury. But live session on Friday will greatly
help the pitching coach to see if Masset is indeed ready to throw.
