Cincinnati Reds: Regular season results – MLB June 2011
Having lost 11 of their last 14 games, things were not looking very bright for Cincinnati Reds. The NL Central champs had lost series to Cleveland Indians, Philadelphia Phillies and Atlanta Brewers and they were hoping to get things back on track with strong
performances in the month of June 2011.
In third and final game of a three match series against Milwaukee Brewers, the Reds made most of the available opportunities. Showing their amazing fighting spirit and willpower, Dusty Baker and his men secured a memorable 4-3 win to earn their first series
victory of the month. Joey Votto and Jay Bruce hit two homers during Cincinnati’s dramatic comeback and Francisco Cordero scored in the winning run on an unexpected opportunity as the Reds celebrated a deserving series victory.
"That's a big number," said Cordero, who also pitched for Detroit. "I don't know what to say. I'm just so excited. I'm really happy. I'm just glad I could get it out of the way. Now I can focus on getting saves and helping us get to the playoffs."
The Reds made a confident start to their next three match series against Los Angeles Dodgers. The pitchers did a marvellous job as they managed to restrict the opposition team to a very small total. Scott Rolen came up with a brilliant performance as he
batted in a two-run single with two out in fifth innings to let his side take 1-0 lead in the series. He managed to put in a tremendous effort.
"I still like to measure how things are going by things like average and runs batted in and runs scored," said Rolen, who hadn't driven in a run since May 24 in Philadelphia. "RBIs and runs scored are big things for me, and it's painful to go through a drought
like that.”
However, in the following two games, the Reds were unable to deliver the goods and they experienced an embarrassing series loss to Los Angeles Dodgers, which also damaged their win-loss record to 30-30.
In a three match series against Chicago Cubs, the Red raised their game to a higher level and they won the opening two games quite comprehensively. But nothing lasts forever and the Reds were hammered 1-4 in third and final match.
With series’ victories over Los Angeles Dodgers and Tampa Bay Rays, Dusty Baker and his men ended the month of June on a pretty decent note. However, Baker still believed that there was room for improvement and he aimed to give even better results in their
future fixtures. Unable to find consistency in their game play, the Reds had a tough challenge to face in the month of July.
