Cincinnati Reds: Regular season results – MLB May 2011
With a decent 14-13 win-loss record, things were looking pretty good for Cincinnati Reds at the end of April 2011. Reds’ manager Dusty Baker was hoping to achieve even better results in the month of May 2011 to reach the top of wild card standings.
Although the Reds lost the opening game of a three match series to Houston Astros, they came back strongly to register their first series victory of the month. Making a large number of unforced errors in game one, Dusty Baker and his men fell short of expectations.
However, in the following two games, they raised their game to a higher level.
Jay Bruce pulled a double just inside first base and Cincinnati Reds rallied past the Astros to level the series.
"It was like we were sleeping, then we woke up," Bruce said. "We tend to do that. Anytime they walk the leadoff guy, you know you have the opportunity to score some runs. We have a knack for doing that. It shows our resiliency."
The Reds showed amazing determination and mental strength in third and final game of the series. Coming back from behind, they stunned their opponents with some high quality baseball. Homer Bailey was the star of the show as the right hander returned from
the disabled list with six encouraging innings and he led his side to a much needed win over the Astros.
"It's nice to be able to have them back," Baker said. "The next step is to have them back and comfortable. With the injuries and their layoff, who knows? They should be strong in September, and maybe October will be their September with the wear and tear.
It could work out great for us."
The Reds looked on top of their game in their next three match series against Chicago Cubs. Showing no signs of nerves, Dusty Baker’s side handled the pressure absolutely superbly in the opening game. Jay Bruce homered at a very crucial time to lead his
side to a memorable win over the Cubs.
Despite losing their way a bit in second game, the Reds bounced back strongly in the decider to earn their second series victory of the month.
Johnny Cueto put up a great show as he pitched into the seventh innings to let his side clinch 2-0 victory over the Chicago Cubs. Completing series sweep against St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs in a great style, the NL Central champs improved their
win-loss record to 23-17.
However, they were unable to maintain their form throughout the month and they suffered series’ loss to Cleveland Indians, Philadelphia Phillies and Atlanta Braves, which also damaged their win-loss record significantly.
