Cincinnati Reds’ Ryan Ludwick hits go-ahead single in 5-4 victory against Miami Marlins – MLB News
Cincinnati Reds on Sunday, September 15, avoided the series sweep after Ryan Ludwick hit a go-ahead single to beat the Miami Marlins 5-4 at Marlins Park. Ludwick’s single came in the 11th inning, bringing a much-needed victory for the Reds – keeping them on top of the National League Central.
Ludwick was naturally excited and jubilant after the go-ahead single.
"That was a big one for us," Ludwick said. "That's a team fighting to spoil people probably and they gave us all we could handle for three straight days. Just to be able to get that one was very important.”
Sunday’s game saw the Reds with 17 hits, tying the season high as the Reds journeyed to success, backed by an exerting bullpen. Dioner Navarro, Didi Gregorius and Ludwick went for three hits each to add to a total of 17.
Reds' team manager was obviously very happy with the team’s overall performance in the series’ finale to avoid the sweep.
"We did get a lot of hits," Reds' manager Dusty Baker said. "We left a ton of guys on base, had a lot of opportunities, which is the name of the game. The more opportunities you get, sooner or later you're going to bust through."
Mat Latos pitched 7.2 innings, allowing seven hits and four runs with 3.76 ERA, having had a total of eight strike-outs. Marlins' Ricky Nolasco, on the other hand, allowed three runs in his five innings and a total of 10 hits.
The Reds had to rely on the bullpen to do needful and it did not disappoint them. Sam LeCure did not allow any hit in 1.1 inning, Sean Marshal allowed a hit in 0.2 inning and Logan Ondrusek allowed none in his 0.1 inning to keep the game tied.
It was Ludwick who hit a go-ahead single in the 11th against Carlos Zambrano, making it 5-4 for the Reds. Jonathan Broxton pitched a perfect inning to save another game for the Reds in the absence of closer Aroldis Chapman, giving the team a 5-4 win in a crucial game to also avoid the series sweep.
