Cincinnati Reds’ Sean Marshall pitches against his former team – MLB News
The Cincinnati Reds’ reliever Sean Marshall had his first game on Monday, March 12, against his former team, the Chicago Cubs. Traded to the Reds for the likes of Dave Sappelt and Travis Wood, Marshall has brought with himself energy and vigour.
The fact that he remained with the Cubs for nine seasons had almost made him an inseparable part of the club. However, now that he has been traded to the Reds, the player finds the atmosphere for himself cordial and friendly.
"I've been very lucky to have been in a Cubs uniform for nine seasons," Marshall said. "There are a lot of players traded every couple years. I was always thankful for all my days at Wrigley Field. We'll be back the second week of the season playing the
Cubbies, so it'll be just like going home again."
With the three-year deal that he signed with the Cincinnati Reds worth $16.5 million, the left handed reliever will indeed be a source of strength for the club. As much as his presence will be of consequential importance for the team, his absence from the
Cubs will be conspicuous.
That fact is something which all the players will acknowledge, chief among whom is Jeff Samardzija. "Consistency -- what else is there to say about Sean?" Cubs pitcher Jeff Samardzija said. "I'm not just talking about on the field, Sean was great off the
field, too.”
The relief pitcher had a good season the past year in 78 games that he played representing the Chicago Cubs. In 75.2 innings that he pitched, he gave up only 21 runs with 2.26 ERA with 1.10 WHIP, having six wins to his credit.
In the total of 292 games that he has played in the career, Marshall has 32 wins to his credit with a 3.96 ERA. With Ryan Madson already in the Cincinnati Reds, the spot covered by Marshall will pave the way for better manoeuvring of the pitcher.
The Reds will thus look to Marshall with the expectation of bringing about big wins for the team at a time when the club is looking for any major accomplishment.
