Cincinnati Reds: Spring Training results – MLB 2011
Cincinnati Reds made a decent start to their Spring Season campaign as they battled past Cleveland Indians 7-6 on February 27. Showing great determination, fighting spirit and mental strength, the Reds handled the pressure absolutely brilliantly. Matt Maloney
pitched two scoreless innings and the Reds rallied for two runs in ninth inning to overcome Cleveland Indians in a thrilling encounter.
However, in their next game against the Indians, Cincinnati Reds looked completely out of sorts. The hitters failed to post even a single run on the board as the Reds lost the game by a big margin 12-0. The pitchers were also unable to execute their game
plan to perfection and they let the opposition team dictate terms.
In a game against Los Angeles Angels, the Reds made a large number of unforced errors. Wasting opportunities, they really did not help themselves. Starter Jered Weaver allowed only one run and two hits in two innings to help the Angels outshine the Reds.
Johnny Cueto allowed two runs and two hits in three innings.
"I'm very happy with my first time," Cueto said. "I had good location. I used all my pitches. They hit a double off a 2-1 changeup. I wouldn't have thrown it in that situation, but I wanted to work on it."
Raising their game to a higher level, Cincinnati Reds displayed high quality baseball in a match against Oakland Athletics. Showing no signs of nerves, the Reds clinched a narrow 7-6 win to improve their win-loss record 2-2. Thrashing Chicago White Sox,
Los Angeles Dodgers and Seattle Mariners, the Reds earned four straight victories to gain some winning momentum.
Against the Mariners, Dontrelle Willis tossed two perfect innings and the Reds defeated their rivals quite comfortably. Team manager Dusty Baker was very pleased with the way his team responded to difficult situations during the contest and he aimed to continue
their impressive form throughout the training season.
"All the young kids are looking good," Reds’ manager Dusty Baker said. "Just keep playing."
Crushing San Diego Padres 15-5 on March 8, the Reds looked in supreme form. Aaron Haran hit a three run home-run to let his side secure a huge victory.
"You kind of want to go out there and do well against your old team," said Harang, the Reds' opening day starter the last five seasons who signed with his hometown Padres in December. ""I guess I look at it that it's better to get it out of the way down
here than having it happen the first time throwing against them during the season.
With three consecutive wins over Arizona Diamondbacks, Chicago White Sox and Cleveland Indians, Dusty Baker and his men ended the spring season strongly.
