Cincinnati Reds’ Todd Frazier among candidates for NL Rookie of the Year Award – MLB News
The Cincinnati Reds' infielder Todd Frazier admitted on Tuesday, August 14, that he sees a chance in his becoming the National League Rookie of the Year. Given the consistency he has maintained and contributing regularly to the team’s win, there has been increasing buzz that he will obtain the much-valued award.
But all said, Frazier’s focus for now is not the Rookie of the Year Award. It is rather being an invaluable source for the club’s victories – something that he has been doing since the start of the season – especially after All-Star first baseman Joey Votto’s going into the disabled list.
"I'd be lying if I said I don't look at it, but I do. It's part of the game," Frazier said. "I understand there is a chance. But at the same time, it's my role. I have to know my role playing and I've got to understand that we have to win and get to the playoffs. You play the team game. I learned at a young age that all of that individual stuff will take care of itself."
Having played 89 games this season so far, Frazier has maintained an impressive .280 average in 286 at-bats, hitting 14 homers and 48 RBIs with 79 hits. In total bases, he stands third in the National League rookies and second in homers.
With .524 slugging percentage and five triples, he is already leading the rookies in the National League.
While there is a characteristic consistency that he has exhibited, what is important to remember is that he has done well in the absence of Joey Votto and – at times, Brandon Phillips. With enormous pressure on the young player’s shoulders, Frazier has done rather remarkably well so far.
The other strong candidate to be considered for the Rookie Award is Washington National’s Bryce Harper. Nonetheless, Frazier has opportunities at hand to further improve his record and bring more victories for the team with phenomenal hitting.
The Reds which sit atop the National League Central ranking are operating short of players – will need Fraziers’ consistency to help the team remain at top.
