Cincinnati Reds’ Todd Frazier third in BWAA Rookie of the Year balloting – MLB News

Cincinnati Reds' infielder Todd Frazier on Monday finished third in the National League Rookie of the Year balloting. It was Washington Nationals’ Bryce Harper who won the prestigious and much-sought award by winning a total of 112 points followed by Arizona Diamondbacks' Wade Miley who finished second with 105 points and 12 first-place votes. .
Harper won 16 first-place votes of the 28 ballots cast by members of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America, while Frazier scored 45 points with a total of 5 first-place votes.
Since 1999 when Scott Williamson last won the National League Rookie of the Year honour, no Reds’ player has achieved this accomplishment. Frazier did finish in the Top 3, but the other two rivals were being considered really tough given the statistics.
However, Frazier was instrumental in keeping the Reds’ offence in working order just when the likes of Scott Rolen and Joey Votto were in the disabled list. His hitting .305 with eight homers and 32 RBIs, in Joey Votto’s 47 games' absence, was one of the reasons why the Reds remained atop the National League Central.
It did not stop there.
The season was marked with his offensive and defensive feats as the rookie player went on to bolster the Reds in the absence of key players.
"I'm glad that we have him," Reds' manager Dusty Baker said. "I don't know where we would be if we didn't have him, especially with Joey being out and Scott being out for so long."
In 30 straight games from August 8 to September 8, Frazier reached base safely in a career-best – which actually was the longest stretch by a Reds' hitter in 2012.
With 19 homers in 128 games this past season, Frazier hit .273, having had 67 RBIs – which was second in the National League among the rookies along with the slugging percentage of .498.
Although he could not earn the most points here needed for Rookie of the Year Award, Frazier’s performance reflected the talent he possesses and the consistency that adds an extra component to his overall performance.
