Cincinnati Reds’ Walt Jocketty confident after Mat Latos induction – MLB News
The Cincinnati Reds’ general manager Walt Jocketty has defended his decision to acquire Mat Latos after the exchange of four players to the San Diego Padres. Questions will inevitably arise on as to what prompted the team to go for the acquisition that would
entail losing no less than four players.
However, the departure of Edinson Volquez, Brad Boxberger – the right hander, infielder Yonder Alonso and Yasmani Grandal – the catcher, would be a fair deal so long as it adds to upgrading the rotation at this time.
Having earlier called Mat Latos a potential Number one starter, Jocketty puts Latos behind Johnny Cueto who solidifies the Cincinnati Reds’ defence.
"I wouldn't have made the deal with this many players in it if you didn't have that control," Jocketty said. "You're not only getting potential top-of-the rotation starter someday, but you do have control of him and it's going to be a couple years before
he starts thinking big money, so that was a very important part."
Latos, on the other hand, is apparently pretty excited with the prospect of playing in the Cincinnati Reds. Having played thrice against the Reds in his career, Latos will feel invigorated with the otherwise strong offence that the Reds have, providing the
defence the needed boost.
"A lot of talent," Latos said of what he knew about the Reds. "One through eight it was a tough lineup to throw to.”
The trade rumours that were in the air for quite a while have finally materialised in this case. From what the pitcher put, he is excited about playing for the Cincinnati Reds in the days to come.
As confident as the general manager of the team sounded after this welcome trade, it seems the Reds have every reason to rely on the strong arm of Latos. With Johnny Cueto out there, Cincinnati will have a stronger bullpen this season to go against the rival
teams, surfacing as a new challenge. It will be interesting to see the impact Latos will have on the Reds’ pitching depth.
