Cincinnati Reds’ Zack Cozart sent to 15 day disabled-list – MLB News
As the Cincinnati Reds struggle to get on the rivals, they received shocking news on Sunday when the rookie short-stop Zack Cozart fell victim to injury. In an attempt to make a tag, the short-stop sprained his left elbow and was subsequently sent to the
15 day disabled list.
The experience was immensely painful for the Cincinnati Reds’ short-stop Cozart who will now have to wait for over two weeks to see his injury heal.
"I don't really know too much," Cozart said. "I know I've got a lot of swelling and pain in there. "It's very frustrating. I was just starting to get comfortable up here, get my routine down. It's a tough break."
It must also be mentioned that there are chances that Cozart may take longer than two weeks to recover. All the same and importantly, he was recently promoted for the Majors and the player was performing relatively well all this while.
Describing what happened while endeavouring to make that tag, Cozart said, "I just felt a little something pop. I don't know what happened really. I've been in that situation a lot. I guess I just hit him perfect where it bent the elbow back."
With Cozart’s fate unknown for the time being, Paul Janish has been called in to replace him. Facing demotion previously, Janish will have to prove his worth in the absence of Cozart as the team desperately needs a strong player to guide them to the victory.
Importantly, the Reds have found a worrying spot in short-stop. No player has consistently performed at the short-stop position after the departure of Orlando Cabrera.
The fact that even Janish struggled and was to be demoted so that he could improve his hitting shows how big a loss Cozart will be in the coming weeks. By the time Janish returns and makes a start, it will only remain open to wide speculation whether or
not he will be able to perform to his best.
For the player, it goes without saying, it is an opportunity. There is a likelihood that he will compensate for it with good performances in the days to come. "It's one of those situations where you've got to kind of take advantage of the circumstances,
even though they're not ideal," Janish said.
With 11 games that he has played this season, Cozart has scored six runs and has had 12 hits to his credit, having an average of .324 and .324 OBP. The 25-year-old short-stop has a long way to go to improve his record and come forward as a player inevitably
needed for the team.
