Cincinnati Reds add Todd Redmond to the roster – MLB News
The Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday, July 17, decided to add right-handed Todd Redmond to the roster as the team continues its march of the second-half of the season plagued by some injuries. The biggest injury recently is that of Joey Votto, the superstar whom the Reds placed on 15-day disabled list on Tuesday.
Redmond has been traded from the Atlanta Braves to the Reds. Part of the reason why the Reds have gone for this decision is the blister on the index finger of Johnny Cueto, which could create some problem for him. The Reds have a total of five starters since the start of the season.
Provided Cueto falls into disabled list, something that has not happened and the Reds wish it never happened, there is to be a backup. Cueto was facing the same problem on Tuesday, but he pitched well at the end.
Redmond was brought so that he could be used in bullpen if the need arose. That is what the team manager referred to as the Reds want a stronger bullpen.
"We need innings," manager Dusty Baker said. "I was in that bullpen deep and early [Monday]. We've got a bunch of guys like Simon that threw three innings yesterday. A couple of guys have thrown two out of three days or three out of four days."
The 27-year-old reliever has a lot to do in the days ahead. He has had a 3.58 ERA in 18 starts for Gwinnett this year. He knows the Reds want him as a reliever and he is happy to be here.
"They just want me for a long relief role type of thing. That's all I know," Redmond said. "As long as I'm here, I'm fine. I'm just happy to be here."
Having said that, the Reds also have to handle the issue of an extra hitter that they need. Who will do that is a query having no answer right now.
"We'll see what we can do tomorrow," Baker said. "We have things in the works. If I say 'yeah,' and the bat doesn't come, then you look bad."
With Redmond there in the bullpen, the Reds now have 13 pitchers in the team.
