Cincinnati Reds consider extending Nick Masset’s contract – MLB News
The Cincinnati Reds’ general manager Walt Jocketty stated on Wednesday, January 25 that the club was looking for a deeper bullpen. To do that, the team is finding ways to get a deal done with the right-hand reliever Nick Masset.
If this happens, the Cincinnati Reds shall succeed in avoiding arbitration for the reliever. Not only that, it will help the club charge up and strengthen their defence. If the Reds get Masset on an extended contract for another year or two, it will be good
news for the club as far as the bullpen is concerned.
While his induction is important, what Jocketty made known was that the player was productive and completely reliable.
"We have a little deeper bullpen," Jocketty said. "We figured if we use him in the right situations, that he will be more productive. With the depth we have in the 'pen, he should be able to do that. He's got great stuff and is very reliable. He is willing
to take the ball every day, which can be the problem. He might have to tell us when he needs to back off, and we might need to back him off sometimes."
It is the details of the contract that need to be sorted out at the moment. The Cincinnati Reds have offered the player $2.1 million while Masset himself has been seeking for $2.9 million. From how it looks, the club will eventually get the deal done.
Jocketty stated that the team was looking for a physical first, prior to making any decision because he believes it is always better to be safe than sorry. Masset has a good record if one has to look at that.
Experienced, he might not have been as impressive as the club had expected him to be. Nonetheless, like the general manager commented, he is a reliable reliever to turn to. He showed consistency in 2009 and 2010, failing to do that in 2011.
Be that as it may, there still is a chance that the club might choose to extend his contract. The team will be looking to solidify their roster before the upcoming Spring Training sessions.
