Cincinnati Reds consider moving Aroldis Chapman to rotation – MLB News
The Cincinnati Reds are reported to be in talks with Jonathan Broxton’s agent for a three-year contract. If the deal materialises, this will enable the Reds to move Aroldis Chapman to the rotation, assigning him the role of starter.
The report came to the surface on Monday, November 26. The deal has its significance for the Reds, especially when it comes to the rotation and bullpen. The National League Central winner made most of these two aspects this past season, outshining their rivals.
From Johnny Cueto to Bronson Arroyo, Mat Latos and Mike Leake, the rotation remained seemingly invulnerable. That was one of the reasons why the Reds remained atop the National League Central, effortlessly making it to the post-season games.
In a year when Aroldis Chapman emerged as one of the best closers in the National League, the debate that now has entered the discourse is whether or not the Reds should try him in the rotation.
That which will be seriously weighed as the debate rages on is Chapman’s having shoulder fatigue during the season that led to his shutdown for 10 days. In his absence Jonathan Broxton, a reliever, was to step up.
Broxton remained 4-for-4 in save chances. That spoke volume for the potential of Broxton to pitch efficiently whenever and wherever required. The fact that he posted 2.48 in his 60 appearances, with 27 saves to his credit and 45 strike-outs, set him apart among the National League relievers.
Add to it his 111 career saves with 3.10 ERA. The Reds last year had Ryan Madson to pitch as a closer, but Tommy John surgery rendered him unable to pitch. It was Chapman who then had to be brought after Sean Marshall did not probably live up to expectations.
As to what the Reds’ next move will be hinges upon how things figure. Broxton’s success as a closer will be a harbinger of big changes for the Reds, enabling them to have more options in the bullpen for setup role.
Having had some of the best pitchers in their possession, the Reds will have a stronger combination next year with this intended move.
