Cincinnati Reds deal with Sean Marshall completed – MLB News
The Cincinnati Reds have finally sealed a contract with reliever Sean Marshall, augmenting and strengthening the bullpen at a crucial time. The acquisition of this lefty reliever, however, has come with a price for the Reds.
While Sean Marshal shall remain the part of the Reds for the upcoming season, the Reds had to give up the young outfielder, Dave Sappelt, the left-handed starting pitcher, Travis Wood and Ronald Torreyes, a Minor League infielder.
Sean Marshall, however, offers a lot in terms of what he stands for. Considered to be one of the best relievers baseball currently has, he has an impressive 3.96 ERA in the 292 games that he has appeared in. He has 32 saves to his credit in the 530.0 innings
that he has pitched.
However, what has brought him to limelight in the recent years is the consistency the reliever has exhibited. Take for example the performance in 2011, where he had a record of 2.26 ERA with 6 saves to his credit, going for 79 strikeouts. During the last
2 years, he has maintained an ERA of 2.45 in 158 games.
“He's one of the top left-handed relievers in the game, a guy we're really impressed with and always had difficulty hitting against,” Reds general manager, Walt Jocketty said of Marshall. “We felt he'd be a great addition to our club.”
He obviously threw light on the reason why the club decided to go for this seemingly high-priced trade. “There were some areas we thought we were lacking in,” Jocketty added. “The way to address it, for us, was to do it through the trade market. We're not
going to go out and afford high-priced free agents. That's part of the reason we sign and develop players -- whether we use them to keep for our Major League club or use them in trades.”
With the massive change that the Cincinnati Reds have now gone through, filling the roster with some expensive but accomplished players, it would be interesting to see how they capitalise on the move. The Reds would definitely want to shore up more for the
team.
