Cincinnati Reds decide to send Devin Mesoraco to Triple-A Louisville – MLB News
The Cincinnati Reds decision on Thursday, August 23 to send catcher Devin Mesoraco to Triple-A Louisville caught many by surprise. However, the team manager had his own explanation for it. Admitting that the decision was tough, he said he had to make room for the other catcher, Ryan Hanigan.
"It's a tough position, like I said in Spring Training, when you have a rookie catcher that's not playing every day and the fact that Hanigan was playing so well," Reds' manager Dusty Baker said while talking about this move.
Part of the surprise was in the fact that Mesoraco was being tipped as one of the best things to happen to the Reds, as he remained a top prospect when this season was beginning.
But performance lately was not up to the mark, culminating with the decision of team management. For example, he maintained .210 average with five homers and 14 RBIs to his credit, leaving a lot of things to be desired.
Earlier facing two-game suspension, he was restored but a decision to this effect came that was surprising. Nonetheless, the team manager does not rule out the player’s comeback provided things go well in the Triple-A wherein he will have an opportunity to get regular at-bats.
The team manager, be that as it may, made it clear that everything will depend upon the progress he makes.
"We're hoping that's what the final outcome is," Baker said. "It depends on him and depends on the progress that he makes. We really want to stress that it has nothing to do with his suspension. This has kind of been dabbled about for a while. We could see his confidence has gone down some. We want to get his confidence back, offensively, defensively, throwing and all kind of ways."
The regular season is nearing the end, with playoffs around the corner. The Reds undeniably have all the chances to easily make it to the playoffs considering their remarkably good performance so far. Whether Mesoraco makes it to the post-season remains a question which does not have a certain answer.
