Cincinnati Reds defeat Atlanta Braves 11-2 – MLB Update
Edgar Renteria drove in three runs on Saturday, July 23 to help the Cincinnati Reds beat the Atlanta Braves 11-2 at the Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati.
A night after losing the first game to the Braves, the Reds’ offence played a different game to win the game.
Renteria came on the plate just when the rookie short-stop Zack Cozart had to leave after an injury in the fourth inning. Renteria put in a magical performance to guide the Reds to victory over the Braves.
"Fortunately, Edgar was able to come in and give us three big RBIs," Baker said. "He was sick, too. Hopefully, he's feeling better tomorrow. He really came through big-time when we needed it. He's going to play a big role down the stretch."
"You don't want to come in like that," Renteria said. "You don't want guys to get hurt, but I'm glad I was ready when they called me. I didn't feel good, but I had to play."
Joey Votto was first to lay the foundation of a strong game for the Reds with a single in the very first inning against the Braves’ starter Derek Lowe. But Derek Lowe compensated that with a two-run RBI he scored against the Homer Bailey in the second inning.
As the Braves had a 2-1 lead at the end of fifth inning whereby Lower and Bailey were both pitching extraordinarily good Renteria came in the sixth with a big hit, driving in two runs to level the score
Brandon Phillips scored a tiebreaking run in the same inning against the struggling Lowe. Bill Bray relieved Bailey and pitched a shut-out seventh to maintain a 4-2 lead which then followed by the recuperating Reds’ offence.
Chris Heisey scored an RBI single against Scott Proctor, Renteria drove in his third run and Phillips went for his second RBI in the game to make it 7-2 for the Reds. Miguel Cairo got another RBI to add a run to the Reds expanding lead.
Todd Frazier, whose three-run homer exhilarated the crowd in an inning of Proctor that saw 5-hits and seven runs, giving an ultimate 11-2 lead to the Reds. Logan Ondrusek pitched a shut-out eighth to keep the lead intact.
Jose Arredondo perfected the victory for the Reds in the ninth when he was sent as a closer. He pitched a scoreless inning to not only give the Reds a 11-2 win, but also bring the team back in the three-game series which now stands at 1-1 between two increasingly
competitive teams.
