Cincinnati Reds defeat Chicago Cubs 10-0 – MLB Update
Right-hand pitcher Johnny Cueto set the tone as the Cincinnati Reds made their way to another victory crushing Chicago Cubs with a 10-0 margin on Sunday, March 6 at Goodyear Ball Park.
Cueto’s three scoreless innings was accompanied by the World Series Most Valuable Player Edgar Renteria who received only two hits.
The pitchers were impressive in the field as they allowed only two hits, one each to Cueto and Joseph. Chicago also looked helpless facing Francisco Cordero and Joseph as both forced two players to leave the field by striking them out. Cueto exhibited what
he was hired for in the off-season for a four year deal worth $27-million.
"I was working harder last year because I knew it was my last year before I had to talk about money. You guys saw the results," Cueto said. "My mental approach is I'm thinking I haven't done anything yet. I'm thinking like I don't have a contract."
In the Chicago, right-hand pitcher Todd Wellemeyer started the game for Chicago, pitching in two innings. He allowed three hits that cost one run and struck-out two batters. Youngster Casey Coleman strived hard to gain momentum but succeeded in only two
strike-outs, giving three runs on four hits in two innings.
Coleman said, "My goal in spring training was to throw strikes. I pounded the zone pretty good but their guys are pretty good hitters. They kept their hands inside the ball and hit singles. You can live with singles all day."
At bat, last year’s prominent second baseman Renteria hammered two hits that earned him two runs. Reds’ batters were at best when they scored as they managed to post 10 runs including 2 runs each to Zack Cozart and closer Denove. It was a bad day for Chicago
as they were able to hammer only two scoreless hits.
It was the fifth defeat of the Cubs in eight Cactus League 2011 games. However the club will meet with Los Angeles Dodger at the same venue with full strength, according to the manager Dusty Baker. Though their spring record lacks a winning streak, Chicago
has plated 10 first inning runs in their first seven games, scoring in six of seven opening frames thus far, but remained unfortunate in last game.
The Reds will play their next match against Milwaukee Brewers on Monday, March 7 at the same venue. The possible pitcher for today’s game are starter right-hand Homer Bailey followed by combination of Mike Leake, Nick Masset, Bill Bray and Aroldis Chapman.
The Reds 2011 Spring Training roster includes 54 players overall, including 28 pitchers and 12 infielders.
