Cincinnati Reds defeat Colorado Rockies 3-2 – MLB Update
The Colorado Rockies could not hold their momentum on Wednesday, August 10 and lost to the Cincinnati Reds 3-2 at Great American Ball Park.
The Rockies’ offence had a few weaknesses that it could not quite overcome and lost the game.
After winning the first two of this four-game series, the Rockies faltered and allowed the Reds’ defence to prevail. "We made a baserunning error with two outs," Rockies’ manager Jim Tracy said. "But ... there's much more to it than that. You add it up --
13 hits and only two runs."
Tracy was not quite happy about it. "It's not the first time that I've had to sit here and say something like that," Tracy said. "I believe we had a game earlier in the year in Los Angeles, where we had 14 hits and scored two runs. We hit into four double
plays.”
For the Cincinnati, solo show was put up by Mike Leake who pitched 7.1 innings to allow only two runs. "Fortunately, I was able to get a lot of good defense behind me today," Leake said. "I put myself in a hole. I gave up too many two-strike hits today.”
As the Colorado Rockies had won the first game by 10-7, second by 3-2, Wednesday’s game was thought to be another easy ride. Contrary to that, the Reds put stiff resistance and went farthest to overcome the Rockies.
Mike Leake provided a dominating fast start with allowing not even a single hit in the first inning when the game started. He was followed by Kevin Millwood’s equally solid inning, ending the first inning scoreless.
The two pitchers of their respective teams maintained their sway on the game and dominated the respective teams’ offence till the fourth inning when the Reds stormed back into the game. Edgar Renteria was the first one to homer to score the first run for
the Reds.
Jay Bruce homered in the same inning to double the lead for the Reds as Dexter Follower hit a single in the fifth inning to bring the Reds lead down to 2-1. Rockies then got a chance in the sixth inning to level the score with Troy Tulowitzki homer against
Mike Leake.
With the score level, Joey Votto homered for Cincinnati to lend a decisive lead when the sixth inning came to an end. The game was then dominated by Leake who kept throwing strong innings to maintain the 3-2 lead for the Reds.
Francisco Cordero came as a closer in the ninth and finished the game off with 3-2, bringing back the Reds in the four-game series after they lost the first two.
