Cincinnati Reds defeat Houston Astros 2-0 – MLB Update
The Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday, September 22 beat the Houston Astros 2-0 to win the three-game series 2-1 at the Great American Ball Park.
Backed by a strong offence, Bronson Arroyo pitched a shut-out to help his team score the decisive victory against the Houston Astros.
Pitching nine innings and giving up only six hits, the Cincinnati Reds’ starter did not allow any run, to remain the most dominant of player on field. "I've said my whole career, I'd like to come in one day and have the manager tell me I have nine innings,
even if I give up 14 runs," Arroyo said. "Durability is the mark of a starting pitcher."
Arroyo, admittedly, did not have a huge season this time round. Having won 9 of the 31 games he played this season, Arroyo had an expensive 5.09 ERA, something that was in no way impressive for a pitcher of his calibre.
This was something that not only he realises, but also the team manager Dusty Baker.
"People were talking about taking him out of the rotation so he didn't break the home run record," manager Dusty Baker said. "I'm glad for him. It's been a tough year for him. He's a man."
Bronson Arroyo, on Wednesday got the support of the offence as well which contributed to keep the team afloat. Having Brandon Phillips on their side, the Reds made in-roads to success.
Philips had three hits, while Chris Heisey had a hit with that of Michael Cairo that put the team on the winning track.
Chris Heisey did his share in the bottom of the first inning after Bronson Arroyo pitched a shut-out inning. Heisey singled to centre, allowing Phillips to score the first run for the Reds, giving them a lead that Arroyo could defend.
Cairo followed with a homer to left in the bottom of the second inning to double the lead for the Cincinnati Reds.
David Carpenter pitched the eighth inning for the Astros, but Arroyo continued with his magical spell.
With the 2-0 lead favouring the Cincinnati Reds, Arroyo pitched strong innings with different variations that helped him keep the Astros’ hitters at bay with remarkable success, one that paved the way for victory.
Arroyo came and tossed a hitless and scoreless ninth to complete the shut-out game and to win it 2-0 for the Cincinnati Reds, as well as the series victory. The Reds put in a brilliant performance as they dominated the game throughout. It will be interesting
to see how Cincinnati manages to carry their winning momentum forward into their next match-up. The Astros will be looking to improve their performance and end the regular season on high note.
